waiting in the pipeline as previously promised, but I think I have the ultimate excuse in the form of a mini human I&#8217;ve been carrying around for the past 8 months. I don&#8217;t know much about her yet - most will be discovered in about 1.5 months (and for the rest of our lives&#8230;), but I do know that she likes to kick, yawn, and dance when there&#8217;s live music played (she gets especially energetic when the bass is loud). So we can all &#8220;blame&#8221; this miniature bundle of joy for pushing aside everything else and completely taking over my focus, with much anticipation, endless excitement, and a fair amount of worry as well for the person I&#8217;m about to be the mom of &#128558;. </p><p>Meanwhile, I&#8217;m delighted to share my great-bass solo version of <a href="https://youtu.be/agknU_kf6AU?si=fh7eyPKE93XFRynt">&#8216;Two Roses&#8217;</a> (composed by Mordechai Zeira), as well as my composition <a href="https://youtu.be/JUGv3c79YCk?si=jBtV_uBoRi6KOn3Z">&#8216;Alone&#8217;</a>,  performed as a duet with the brilliant Adam Hersh on Rhodes. </p><p>&#8216;Two Roses&#8217; is a beautiful classic song with heartbreaking lyrics, I find it very relevant to the current time. This is the third track from my upcoming EP <strong><a href="https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/talirubinstein/live-recordering-vol-2">&#8216;Live Recordering, Vol. 2&#8217;</a></strong> , and the one I&#8217;m the most thrilled to share with you so far.</p><p>You know how much I love writing melancholic songs, but for this one I went all out in the opposite direction. I usually write music starting from the harmony, letting my fingers find their way on the piano, and sometimes I end up with a very non-user-friendly key when I finally try to play it on the recorder. As always, I&#8217;m accompanied by musicians that I admire and love - Adam Hersh (rhodes), Caleb Buchanan (bass), and Angelo Spampinato (drums), who are truly a dream come true to collaborate with! I was deliberating for a long time about this live recording, and couldn&#8217;t figure out how I felt about sharing this exposed performance - and as time went by, it made less and less sense to put it out.</p><p>A few months ago I had the urge to look at it again - I was curious to know how I&#8217;d feel now that 7 years have passed. Making an effort to put my embarrassment and self-judgement aside, I was very moved by the raw emotion that Dror Pikielny, the director and editor of this video was able to capture, and the complete conviction and true beauty in the playing of my band mates: Micha Gilad on piano, Noam Israeli on drums, and Yoni Marianer on bass, who also was the musical director of the album. For these two reasons, I felt like this had to be shared, regardless of how comfortable I feel. I studied this piece as a teenager with my beloved teacher Bracha Kol.</p><p>Bracha, who received me as a very young student with open arms and an open heart, with care and dedication unlike any other person I know, is probably the main reason why I am a musician today. Over the 13 years with her she taught me not only how to play this instrument, but how to discover myself through music, to express everything I could never find words for through sound. With her I learned to love music so deeply that it seems like every single note from every piece we worked on is stored in my memory forever.</p><p>Bracha wouldn&#8217;t let anyone put me down or dim the light in me, despite some people in high positions telling me I&#8217;m not conforming enough. She never let anyone make me feel small or wrong, and from her I learned - there is no such thing. This is one of the first instrumental compositions I&#8217;ve ever written. Growing up as a performer, I didn&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve got what it takes to write music - I figured that composing comes naturally to some people, and others just don&#8217;t have that ability. One day, I remember thinking I&#8217;d just experiment with the idea - &#8220;If I was a composer, what would I write?&#8221;. This was still too broad of a question, I had to narrow it down. At the time I used to listen to a phenomenal pianist and composer, and a friend of mine from back in the day - <strong>Omer Klein</strong>. I thought to myself - &#8220;what would I write if I was him?&#8221;</p><p>That thought sparked a whole composition which (unlike many of my other compositions) came so effortlessly. I think this idea helped me feel confident, inspired, and to be able to detach myself from the way I perceived my ability. This experiment also taught me that listening to music you love is an essential part of the creative process.</p><p><strong><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBfbPUm1cjM">Click here to watch the video</a></strong></p><p>I&#8217;m so glad I found a path to unlock what became over the years perhaps my biggest passion, apart from the recorder. There&#8217;s something so simple about the original song, although interestingly each line of the original melody is 5-bars long - very atypical for this type of folk music (if you&#8217;re curious you can hear a classic version of the song <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsw1z4xANfs">here</a>). This inspired in me both the thought of stability versus turmoil and its representation in music, and also the use of a repetitive bass line in my arrangement that is based on groupings of 5/8. I also changed the harmony quite a bit in the choruses and kind of hid the main melody in the piano part. I recorde(re)d this EP in front of a live audience in our previous home, which is something I&#8217;ve never dared to do before I met Hush Paz, the visionary of this project and a true sound wizard. He transformed our living room into a high-end studio in a few hours(!!) and also mixed this project with the utmost sensitivity to the finest details. This one has grown and changed with me over the years until it became what it is now. This performance is a collaborative effort with my band mates who put their heart and soul into playing my music. Although this is an Etude for Solitude, I couldn&#8217;t have done this without them.</p><p>The process of writing this piece began with the challenge of composing something with only my recorder. This might seem odd, but almost all of my songs are composed on the piano and start with me exploring different harmonies. But in this song, I wanted to stick to the melodic line and see where it could go, in isolation from its environment. There is a certain quality to a melody on its own, which feels almost like silence. People very close to me know I've dealt with some immense fear throughout my life, since I was very young. Learning as a kid that my dad had a terminal illness shattered my world - from then on, I was preparing every single day for when the time comes. It could have been a few months, a year, two years. It ended up being 21 years. My dad, a real-life superman, beat all odds, to the point his doctors had no advice for him since there wasn't any medical record on people who survived for so long.<br><br>Throughout these 21 long years, while I was blessed to have a wonderful, close and loving relationship with my dad and countless precious moments, I always had that fear grasping at my throat, threatening at any given time that this might be the end of everything. Unfortunately, my dad passed away a few years ago, shortly after I recorded this album. This song was played in his funeral, as requested by my mother, and it ever since gained a new meaning for me.<br><br>The song touches on the twilight zone in between life and death. It's me trying to make sense of the transition from being to seizing, to imagine what the final moments would feel like, and what thoughts go through one's mind as they come to terms with the unimaginable yet inevitable.<br><br>This song, like the rest on this upcoming album, was musically directed by Yoni Marianer with the utmost sensitivity and care. I didn't want to hide behind the recorder, but rather put the compositions and the lyrics in front, as fragile as they are.<br><br>This first song is especially dear to my heart. When I came across this beautiful poem by Yehuda Amichai, it was one of those rare occasion when the music seemed to write itself. Amichai, one of Israel&#8217;s most prominent poets, describes an experience of loss and new beginnings, and how love can evolve and change throughout life&#8217;s journey.<br><br>I was fortunate to work on this song (as well as the other songs on the album) together with one of my favorite human-beings on this planet and a musician I truly admire, Yoni Marianer. Yoni musically directed the project and co-arranged the music with me, as well as played upright bass on all the songs. I'm uber (not sponsered by Uber) excited to share this news - my new song, "Trying to See Clearly", is now out on all platforms!! (see link to full song in the comments). 
I composed this song to the wonderful, fierce and merciless lyrics by Nachum Mochiach a while back, about a woman trying to find her way through the harshness of the big city and the lack of intimacy and connection, intensified by noisy and overwhelming city scenery.

I pieced the song together in collaboration with my dear friend and amazing talent, my musical soulmate, Yoni Marianer, who did the musical production. I'm truly grateful to be surrounded by inspiring people such as Yoni and Nachum, as well as the rest of the team:

Hey guys! I'm happy to share my playalong version for La Bikina by Rubén Fuentes (as performed by Luis Miguel), accompanied by eight people I found that look like me and also play the recorder. No big deal.

What's that cat doing on in the video, you're asking? Well, I'm excited to present RECORDER CHALLENGE NUMBER 1: I invite all you fine recorder players (I know you're out there!) to record yourself playing La Bikina and upload it to Facebook / Instagram / YouTube using the hashtag #labikinarecorder (so I can find you 🤓).

My favorite versions will be featured on my social-media channels.

Video Release: A Horse Busy Transporting Grain


Hey guys, here's the last video from our "Tal and Tali in China" series - this is "A Horse Busy Transporting Grain" (揚鞭催馬運糧忙), a bright and joyful Chinese song by Wei Xianzhong, performed with Tal Zilber.

The best part about traveling, many say, is living for a while as someone else in an alien culture, with different food, different habits, scenery, climate, sounds and signs. The tension between the completely unknown and the remotely familiar - that chicken soup that is almost like the one I used to eat at home - but with a totally new, undescribable twist, which I don't quite know where to place on my palate. The ability to be curious about everything - trying to give it a name, relate it to a memory, make sense of that contradictory feeling - that is, to me, the best thing about touring.

This piece threw me right into that alternate reality. To my western-music accustomed ears, it sounds like a transformed and reconstructed version of such familiar music phrases. It made me think of what the Sopranino Concerto in C would sound like if Vivaldi was born in China. And of course the answer is - nothing like this at all. I wish I could hear this music through someone else's ears.

Happy to share another piece performed by Tal Zilber and I during our China tour in 2019 - Here, There and Everywhere by The Beatles (with a little bit of Chinese influence).

This legendary quartet that’s been the soundtrack of my childhood has left an immense impact on my life. Back then, I felt as if their songs were always there, and will always be - they were everywhere - playing at home in the evenings, or on Saturday mornings, playing in loops on our car’s cassette player for hours on our family trips, all of us quietly humming half-gibberish with whatever we could make of the lyrics. I especially loved the ballads - these perfectly shaped gems of sweet melody and gentle harmony. They had a beginning and an end, and in between, a little world of music that made all the sense without needing to explain anything. I think it was compassion that formed from the sound waves. Back then, when the world was a little frightening and nothing seemed certain - there were Beatles cassettes, and at least for the duration of the song, I knew I need never care.

This EP, full of passion and goofiness, is a story of two people who always wanted to be cool, but ended up playing a harpsichord (or a recorder, in my case). Two people who love music so much and so fully, they won’t let having only two hands stand in the way of playing two keyboard instruments at once (or, two recorders). Two people whose minds love experimenting, but whose hearts are stuck deep in the 17th century. It’s a story about wanting to break free and return home, all at the same time.

I’m so excited to share our creation, composed so thoughtfully and intricately by Apollonio Maiello. Cover art and animation by the person who does not cease to blow my mind, Scott Siskind. Recorded at ATLAS Tonstudio (GER), Mastering and Mixing: Jürgen Losigkeit. Management by the real wonder woman, Floriana Maddalena Maiello.
